Marking a bold new lobbying campaign heading into the fall, leading Latino organizations and other groups that favor immigration reform will join together this coming Tuesday to announce a new legislative strategy on immigration. Leaders of these organizations will convene on Capitol Hill to hold a private strategy session followed by a press conference to announce their support for a "down payment" strategy on immigration reform.
The bipartisan effort will center on jointly passing the Dream Act and the AgJobs bill. And they will announce a new effort to organize a national grassroots campaign - that will engage the Latino voting-age population, immigrants, college students, and others - to help pass the legislation through Congress ahead of the national midterm elections this November.
A new report on the Latino vote heading into the 2010 midterm election as well as a poll of Latino attitudes on immigration reform will be released at the press event.
The national organizations participating in the forum include:
o American Nursery & Landscape Association - ANLA
o Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities - HACU
o Hispanic Federation
o League of United Latin American Citizens - LULAC
o Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund - MALDEF
o National Alliance of Latin American & Caribbean Communities – NALACC
o Southwest Voter Registration Education Project - SVREP
o Trail of Dreams
o United Farm Worker Foundation - UFW Foundation
o William C. Velasquez Institute – WCVI
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) signaled his support for such a down payment approach - specifically announcing his intention to seek passage of the Dream Act - in a recent interview with La Opinion, the leading Spanish-language newspaper in Los Angeles.
Senators Richard Durbin (D-IL) and Richard Lugar (R-IN) are Senate co-sponsors of the Dream Act. Congressmen Howard Berman (D-CA) and Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL) are House co-sponsors of the Dream Act. Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Lugar are Senate co-sponsors of the AgJobs bill. Congressmen Howard Berman (D-CA) and Adam Putnam (R-FL) are House co-sponsors of the AgJobs bill.
