Resolution on Commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day through Service and Advocacy
WHEREAS scientific models anticipate that Latinos will be especially vulnerable to the consequences of extreme Climate Change; and
WHEREAS Latinos stand to benefit greatly from the creation and development of the Green Economy and Green Jobs; and
WHEREAS the organizations of the National Latino Congreso have manifested a concern for the Environment and Environmental Leadership through the passage of at least thirty-four Environmental Resolutions at their three previous convenings; and
WHEREAS by taking a pivotal leadership role in advocating for comprehensive climate policy, the Latino community will make the implementation of this critical policy possible and reap the rewards of the Green Economy as key stakeholders; and
WHEREAS the growth of Earth Day since 1970 has helped engage a broader audience in Environmental Consciousness; and
WHEREAS this Environmental Consciousness has led to concrete tangible results as manifested in the implementation of stronger environmental policies, expanded protection of natural reserves, changes in human behavior, and the removal and reduction of the uses of certain toxins; and
WHEREAS if the United States does not act soon to implement such policies, it may be too late to prevent profound, irreversible environmental consequences of Climate Change such as massive extinctions, large scale natural disasters, shortages of food and drinking water worldwide, and violent conflicts over resources; and
